Alex is head of the firm’s Technology, Media and Telecommunications group, and practices in telecommunications, IT, e-commerce, consumer protection and data protection law.  He is a leading lawyer in emerging areas such as cloud computing and machine to machine (M2M)/IOT technology.  He also has significant experience in market competition and consumer protection issues, licensing and regulatory access, procurement and data protection/privacy law.

Alex acts on large transactions, such as major IT procurements and telecommunications services agreements, and also provides ongoing advisory services.  Clients include a broad range of listed and unlisted entities, including telecommunications providers, software and IT vendors, financial services organisations, airlines and resource and utility companies, and he advises clients in the public sector as well.

Alex has spent a number of years working in-house with various clients, including two-years as in-house lawyer for a national telecommunications carrier, advising on consumer product launches, commercial supply agreements, competition and consumer protection law compliance and privacy issues, and as IT counsel for a listed airline.

Recent examples of Alex’s work include:

  • advising a global consumer credit provider on various privacy and data protection issues
  • advising a global adventure-sports camera manufacturer on Australian Consumer Law obligations and localisation issues in connection with online terms of sale
  • advising a listed property sales-records and valuation provider on all aspects of its licensing arrangements with State property licensing agencies
  • acting for a listed telecommunications carrier on its market-leading automated home solution, including advising on telecommunications interception and data protection legislation, conducting multiple and parallel back-end vendor negotiations and drafting customer contract terms
  • acting for a listed financial services software vendor in relation to drafting its suite of go-to-market contractual documentation and conducting ongoing negotiations with customers based on that documentation
  • advising a global vacuum cleaner manufacturer on privacy and data protection issues
  • advising a global resources company on data retention obligations and strategy
  • advising a listed telecommunications carrier on commercial and regulatory aspects of technology trials with Internet of Things, M2M connected car solutions and big data analytics, and

As a result of his mix of in-house and private practice experience, Alex has a keen understanding of the need for, and means of delivering, high quality, commercially-focused legal advice.
