Matt has practised in both Australia and the United Kingdom.  He is an infrastructure, construction and engineering lawyer who has advised on civil, building, mechanical, mining and structural projects in each state and territorial jurisdiction of Australia and throughout South East Asia.

Matt advises on all aspects of construction, infrastructure and major engineering projects where he works side by side with his clients and their external consultants to successfully deliver their projects. He advises clients on risk mitigation and administration of contracts so as to avoid disputes.

Matt currently acts on behalf of state and local government, government owned corporations, contractors, subcontractors and consultants and advises a number of professional bodies and industry associations.

As a construction law specialist, Matt’s technical knowledge and experience has resulted in him being regularly engaged as a speaker on construction law for both client workshops and industry conferences.

Matt is acknowledged within the building and construction industry as an expert on adjudication disputes under the Security of Payment legislation and has been involved in a number of significant adjudication proceedings, representing claimants and respondents in multiple jurisdictions within Australia.  He has jointly lectured on the Building and Construction Industry Payments Act 2004 (BCIPA) with the Registrar of the Building and Construction Industry Payments Agency at the BSA’s Supershows.

Some of Matt's projects include:

  • advising on various LNG projects in Queensland including the QCLNG gathering systems contractual framework, APLNG civil works, GLNG civil works, Arrow Energy Ltd and AGL JV civil works contracts for bulk excavation and dams

  • advising on the civil works and associated pipeline contracts for the Sino Iron project in Karratha
  • acting on behalf of the liquidators in the Simcorp v Gold Coast Titans matter which was heard before the Queensland Supreme Court
  • acting on behalf of a contractor engaged on the Kurilpa Bridge in Brisbane.  Our client was successfully awarded $6.3 million when the matter proceeded to adjudication.  The background with respect to our client’s claim was that the program of work had been compressed which resulted in our client being entitled to claim acceleration costs
  • advising on the Hay Point Expansion project and the resolution of claims
  • acting on behalf of a national civil contractor with respect to a latent condition claim in which the contractor encountered an additional 40,000 cubic metres of extremely hard rock.  We advised the contractor with respect to both its contractual and security of payment claims which eventuated in the contractor being awarded $12.1 million, and
  • acting on behalf of a civil contractor with respect to claims lodged on a regional ring road (project value $92 million) from various subcontractors and the claim under the head contract.
